Soulja Boy Arrested Again Over Gun in L.A. Traffic Stop

Soulja Boy’s legal troubles just got deeper. The rapper, born DeAndre Cortez Way, was arrested in Los Angeles early Sunday morning (August 3) after police say they discovered a firearm in his vehicle during a routine traffic stop near Melrose and Genesee Avenues.

According to authorities, Soulja was a passenger in the car that got pulled over just after 2:30 a.m. While the reason for the stop hasn’t been made public, officers reportedly saw a gun in plain view, prompting an on-the-spot investigation that led to Soulja’s arrest on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

He was immediately taken into custody. Police have not revealed whether the driver or any other passengers will face charges related to the weapon.

From Birthday Turn-Up to Jail Cell

What makes this arrest even more striking is how it contrasts with the life Soulja Boy had just hours before.

The 35-year-old artist was celebrating his birthday in style, sharing clips on his Instagram Story that included a stop outside his SODMG store, a night out at Poppy nightclub, and moments in the studio working on new music.

The posts painted a picture of a rapper still in control of his image and career. But by dawn, that narrative had flipped—yet another run-in with the law was unfolding.

A Long Trail of Legal Drama

This latest arrest comes as Soulja Boy is already under fire from multiple fronts.

Just earlier this year, a Los Angeles civil court ordered him to pay $4 million in damages to a former personal assistant who accused him of rape and abuse. The verdict was a major blow to his already damaged public image, with the jury siding fully with the woman’s harrowing claims.

That wasn’t his only court loss.

In 2023, he was hit with another judgment—this time for $471,900—after his ex-girlfriend, Kayla Myers, sued him for assault and kidnapping during a 2020 altercation at his California home.

And fans haven’t forgotten his 2019 jail sentence either, which stemmed from a probation violation tied to earlier weapons charges. At the time, the judge ordered both jail time and community service, citing his repeated run-ins with the law.

Felon with Firearm? What That Means

If the charges stick, this latest case could carry serious consequences.

Being a felon in possession of a firearm is considered a felony offense in California and often leads to state prison time, especially for repeat offenders. Given Soulja’s past criminal record, prosecutors could push for harsher penalties—especially if he’s found to have violated any terms of prior probation or court orders.

As of now, no bail amount or court appearance date has been announced, and the LAPD has yet to release further information on the case or the weapon involved.

    No Public Statement—Yet

Soulja Boy has remained silent since the arrest. No official statement has been made by his team, and his Instagram and X (formerly Twitter) accounts have gone dark since the night of his arrest.

Given his history of publicly addressing legal drama—often in fiery livestreams or dramatic tweets—fans are anticipating some sort of response. But for now, the silence is loud.

What’s Next for the “Crank That” Star?

Soulja Boy’s career has always danced between viral moments and violent headlines. A pioneer of digital rap marketing, he helped define an era of YouTube hip-hop—but now, his name is increasingly tied to criminal allegations, not chart-topping hits.

His last major music release barely made a dent, and while he’s tried to maintain relevance via livestream battles, meme-worthy rants, and sneaker sales, his legal issues keep overshadowing the art.

TPR Takeaway: Soulja Boy may have helped build the internet rap era—but now he’s stuck in a real-life battle for redemption. With a rap sheet growing faster than his streams, the question isn’t “what’s next?” It’s: can he survive this one?
