Taylor Swift is paying heartfelt homage to one of pop’s greatest icons — George Michael — on her highly anticipated album The Life of a Showgirl, and those closest to him say he would’ve absolutely loved it.

The superstar’s upcoming record, dropping October 3, will feature a track titled “Father Figure,” inspired by George’s 1987 classic. While it’s not a direct sample, Swift’s version is an interpolation — weaving the original’s unforgettable melody into her own storytelling style.

Kenny Goss, who was George’s partner for 13 years, tells TPR the tribute would’ve made George proud. “George never met Taylor, but I’m sure he would’ve been a fan,” Kenny says, adding that he’s personally touched by the nod. “It’s beautiful to see an artist of her caliber take an interest in his work.”

Kenny admits he had no idea the song was coming, calling it a welcome surprise — and a fresh way to keep George’s legacy alive nearly a decade after his passing. The two met in 1988 and shared a deep relationship before parting ways in 2009, amid public struggles with addiction. George died on Christmas Day in 2016, leaving behind a music legacy that continues to inspire generations.

Now, Taylor is introducing that legacy to her own massive fan base, many of whom may be discovering George Michael’s work for the first time. It’s a bridge between eras — an 80s classic reborn in 2025’s pop landscape.

With The Life of a Showgirl already generating massive buzz, “Father Figure” is shaping up to be one of the album’s most talked-about tracks — not just for Swifties, but for anyone who’s ever been moved by George’s soul-stirring music.
