Temple University is taking Kendrick Lamar’s cultural impact to the classroom. This fall, the Philadelphia-based institution will launch a new academic course titled “Kendrick Lamar and the Morale of M.A.A.D City”, diving deep into the Pulitzer Prize-winning rapper’s music, storytelling, and influence on contemporary conversations about race, identity, and inequality.

The course will be taught by Assistant Professor Timothy Welbeck of the Department of Africology and African American Studies. A scholar and recording artist himself, Welbeck has previously led classes exploring hip-hop’s influence on Black culture and its role in chronicling urban marginalization.

“Kendrick Lamar is one of the leading voices of his generation,” Welbeck shared in a social media statement. “He articulates the complexities of Black life and the pursuit of self-actualization while capturing the pain and resilience of rising from marginalization.”

Thanks for sharing this. I’m looking forward to the fall. https://t.co/BVzb6CSPqx

???? A Deep Dive Into Kendrick’s Music and Social Commentary

The course will explore Lamar’s discography and artistic evolution through an Afrocentric lens, focusing on how his upbringing in Compton and broader social conditions shaped his lyrical narratives.

According to WHYY-FM, students will also:
✅ Examine the legacy of West Coast hip-hop and its influence on Lamar’s thematic development.
✅ Analyze the economic and cultural forces that shaped Compton and how these dynamics emerge in his storytelling.

As part of the curriculum, guest speakers—including individuals who have collaborated with Lamar—are expected to join the class, providing students with insider perspectives on his creative process.

???? A Historic Milestone for Hip-Hop in Academia

This move reflects a growing trend of universities recognizing hip-hop as a legitimate field of study. Lamar’s DAMN., which earned him the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 2018, marked a pivotal moment for the genre, cementing his place in academic syllabi nationwide.

Lamar’s work often tackles themes such as:

    • Systemic racism
    • Generational trauma
    • Spirituality
    • The intersection of art and activism

???? A Monumental Year for Kendrick Lamar

The announcement of Temple’s course arrives during a landmark year for the Compton native. In February 2025, Lamar headlined the Super Bowl halftime show, delivering a performance hailed as one of the most powerful in recent memory.

At the 2025 Grammy Awards, he secured five wins, including Song of the Year and Best Rap Album. Lamar is also on the road with SZA for their Grand National Tour, which will conclude in Sydney, Australia, on December 10.

???? Hip-Hop’s Place in Higher Education

With this new course, Temple University joins a growing list of institutions acknowledging hip-hop’s academic value. For many scholars, Kendrick Lamar’s body of work stands as a vital cultural text worthy of critical analysis.

“This isn’t just about music; it’s about understanding how art reflects and challenges societal structures,” Welbeck added.

???? Would You Take a Kendrick Lamar Class?

Is Kendrick Lamar’s artistry worthy of a college-level deep dive? Should more universities embrace hip-hop as a field of study? Drop your thoughts in the comments!
