Nearly three decades after the beloved sitcom Martin concluded, BET+ has announced a new spinoff series titled Varnell Hill, bringing back Tommy Davidson’s fan-favorite character. Davidson, who originally appeared in a memorable two-part episode during the show’s second season, will reprise his role as the flamboyant talk show host in this upcoming workplace comedy.

A Fresh Take on a Classic Character

The new series will delve into the behind-the-scenes antics of a long-running late-night talk show, offering a satirical look at the challenges of staying relevant in today’s media landscape. Davidson expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “Did you miss me? Well, now you don’t have to! I’m excited and honored to be a part of such a creative project with the brilliant mind of Martin Lawrence.”

    Martin Lawrence’s Involvement

While it’s unclear if Martin Lawrence will appear on-screen, he is confirmed to serve as an executive producer for the series. Lawrence’s involvement ensures that the new show will maintain the comedic essence that made Martin a staple in 90s television.

    Expanding the ‘Martin’ Universe

Varnell Hill isn’t the only project breathing new life into the Martin franchise. BET+ is also developing Young Martin, a prequel series that will explore the early life of Martin Payne in modern-day Detroit. This hour-long drama aims to provide fans with a deeper understanding of the character’s roots and the experiences that shaped him.

    A Nod to the Original

Davidson‘s portrayal of Varnell Hill left a lasting impression on audiences, with his catchphrase “Did you miss me?” becoming iconic. The character’s return is a testament to the enduring popularity of Martin and its impact on pop culture.

    Looking Ahead

As BET+ continues to expand its original programming, Varnell Hill stands out as a promising addition that blends nostalgia with contemporary storytelling. Fans eagerly await the series’ release, anticipating the return of a character who, despite limited screen time, became an integral part of the Martin legacy.

Stay tuned for more updates on casting, release dates, and behind-the-scenes insights as production progresses.
