Set to open for applications on April 17th, the Dream Collective is an exciting opportunity for filmmakers to gain hands-on training, mentorship, and valuable access to industry professionals. A key figure in this initiative is Dawn Hudson, former CEO of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Hudson, who has been appointed to lead the Dream Collective, echoed Perry’s sentiments about the importance of diversity in filmmaking. “It is of vital importance to have a diversity of voices in cinema and television,” she said. “You can’t create without community. And you damn sure can’t make films.”
The Dream Collective program will be open to aspiring filmmakers from all walks of life, with an eye on those who have been historically underrepresented in the industry. The selection process will begin by accepting 1,000 applicants, who will be whittled down to 100 preliminary finalists in May. From there, 10 finalists will receive an exclusive invitation to an intensive training workshop at Tyler Perry Studios, where they will get an inside look at the process of creating high-quality films in a professional environment.
To further invest in the success of these filmmakers, the program will offer five grand prize winners $30,000 each to produce their short films later this year in Atlanta, utilizing the world-class resources of Tyler Perry Studios, along with continued mentorship and professional guidance.
