After nearly two decades, Will Smith has released his highly anticipated album Based On A True Story. The 14-track project dropped on Friday, March 28, marking a significant return to his musical roots for the actor, producer, and rapper. The album features collaborations with artists like Teyana Taylor, social media personality B. Simone, and his longtime friend and collaborator DJ Jazzy Jeff.

In this new project, Smith reflects on the ups and downs of his career and personal life, addressing the controversies that have followed him in recent years, including his high-profile altercation with comedian Chris Rock at the 94th Academy Awards and his complicated relationship with wife Jada Pinkett-Smith.

Will Smith Opens Up in ‘Barbershop’

In the album’s intro track, “Barbershop,” Will Smith wastes no time diving into the public scrutiny and the pressure he’s faced over the years. Rapping about the questions and criticisms surrounding his career and his family life, he unapologetically acknowledges his mistakes while also embracing his journey.

The intro sets the tone for the album, with Smith addressing his personal struggles with lyrics such as, “Who the fck Will Smith think he is?/And that boy damn crazy how he raising them kids (What?).”* He follows it up with a playful yet serious self-reflection, “No, he isn’t, Yes, he is/No, he isn’t, Yes, he is/And I ain’t never gonna forgive him for that sht he did (Boy, bye).”*

This raw openness extends further in the album as Smith continues to unpack his public persona and the complex dynamics of his family. He also raps about the perception people have of him, acknowledging both the love and the hate that he has received over the years.

A Return to Hip-Hop Roots

On Based On A True Story, it’s clear that Will Smith is embracing his roots as a rapper. Known for his iconic career as both a movie star and a hip-hop artist, this album is a return to the music industry that initially launched his fame. On the album cover, Smith sports Philadelphia Phillies gear, a subtle nod to his hometown and the city that helped shape his career.

Smith’s last album, Lost And Found, was released in 2005, and featured the hit single “Switch.” That album peaked at No.6 on the US Billboard 200 and earned a gold certification from the RIAA. Now, with Based On A True Story, he is reconnecting with his musical fans and bringing his unique blend of humor, introspection, and street-savvy lyrics back to the forefront.

Will Smith’s Hometown Honors

Aside from his music release, Will Smith has also been honored for his achievements in his hometown of Philadelphia. On March 26, Smith received the honor of having a portion of 59th Street renamed to “Will Smith Way”. This public recognition celebrates his contributions to the city and the world, both as an entertainer and philanthropist.

Expressing his gratitude on Instagram, Smith shared his excitement about the recognition, writing, “Philly, I am yours. This is the honor of a lifetime.” In the post, Smith also included photos of himself posing with Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle L. Parker and other local officials. The honorary street sign is a testament to Smith’s enduring legacy in the City of Brotherly Love.

Smith’s deep connection to Philadelphia is evident, and in a heartfelt Instagram post, he shared a video of the street sign, captioning it, “Hey, Philly. I love you…I am yours, you are mine…I will see you on the Fourth of July.” This moment further solidifies his place as one of the city’s most beloved figures.

The album’s blend of humor, self-reflection, and authenticity makes it clear that Smith is embracing who he is, flaws and all.
