The NBA community is in mourning following the death of Memphis Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke, who has reportedly died at the age of 29.

Clarke, born in Vancouver, Canada, was selected 21st overall in the 2019 NBA Draft after a standout college career that saw him rise from San Jose State to Gonzaga, where he became one of the most efficient frontcourt players in the country. His breakout season with the Bulldogs earned him national recognition and helped solidify his place as an NBA prospect.
He was immediately traded to the Memphis Grizzlies following the draft, where he spent his professional career.
Over seven NBA seasons, Clarke appeared in 309 games, averaging 10.2 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game. He was named to the NBA All-Rookie Team in his debut season and quickly became known for his energy, defensive versatility, and efficiency around the rim.
Clarke’s 2025–26 season had been limited after he suffered a significant calf injury in March, restricting him to just two appearances.
Beyond basketball, Clarke was widely regarded as a beloved teammate and deeply respected figure in the locker room. His agency, Priority Sports, released a statement describing him as “the gentlest soul” and emphasizing the positive impact he had on everyone around him, from high school through the NBA.
“We are all beyond devastated by the passing of Brandon Clarke,” the agency said. “He was so loved by all of us here, and everyone whose life he touched.”
The statement continued, highlighting his reputation as a supportive and uplifting presence throughout his career, adding that his loss is “impossible to put into words.”
The Memphis Grizzlies also issued a statement mourning his passing, calling Clarke “an outstanding teammate and an even better person” whose impact on the organization and the wider Memphis community will not be forgotten.
“We express our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time,” the team said.
Clarke’s death comes during a difficult stretch in his personal timeline, following a recent legal issue in Arkansas involving charges related to possession and trafficking of a controlled substance, as well as fleeing law enforcement. The case remained open at the time of his passing.
