Jimmy Butler Ends Miami Heat Standoff, Joins Golden State Warriors in Blockbuster Trade
The long-running feud between Jimmy Butler and the Miami Heat has finally come to an end. On Thursday evening (Feb. 2), the six-time All-Star was traded to the Golden State Warriors in a major deal that sends Andrew Wiggins, Kyle Anderson, and a top-10 protected 2025 first-round pick to Miami in exchange for Butler.
In addition to the trade, Butler has agreed to decline his $52 million player option for the 2025-2026 season, opting instead to sign a two-year, $121 million contract extension through the 2026-2027 season.
The trade also involves several other key players. Dennis Schroder is headed to the Utah Jazz, while P.J. Tucker, a former Heat player from the 2021-2022 season, will return to Miami. Golden State will also send Lindy Waters III to the Detroit Pistons, and Josh Richardson will make the reverse trip from Miami to Detroit.
Warriors Eyeing Butler After Durant Pursuit Falls Through
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Warriors had initially sought to acquire Phoenix Suns superstar Kevin Durant but were thwarted after Durant made it clear that he was not interested in returning to Golden State. Sources suggest that the Warriors’ planned mega-trade would have involved sending Butler to Phoenix in exchange for Durant, who led Golden State to championships in 2017 and 2018. However, with Durant’s decision to remain with the Suns, Golden State shifted their focus to securing Butler.
As details of the trade continue to emerge, teams are working to finalize the finer points of the deal.
Golden State’s Calm Approach Amid Trade Talks
The trade took place while the Heat were playing against the Philadelphia 76ers, and the Pistons were hosting the Cleveland Cavaliers. Golden State’s head coach, Steve Kerr, informed his team about the trade just before they faced off against the Utah Jazz in Salt Lake City.
Both Kerr and Warriors star Steph Curry have expressed their reluctance to make trades driven by desperation. Kerr emphasized the importance of making calculated decisions that would not jeopardize the future of the franchise.
“We are not in that position. It’s important for every organization to know where they are and understand the circumstances,” Kerr stated. “Draymond, Steph, and I have talked about this privately; we’ve talked about this with [Warriors general manager] Mike [Dunleavy Jr.]. There’s a responsibility to do the right thing and not make a trade that would risk the next 10 years.”
