Master P is reflecting on Mystikal’s 20-year prison sentence, arguing that mental health support and the dangers of self-medication deserve greater attention in the music industry.
The No Limit Records founder, whose real name is Percy Miller, addressed the case during an appearance on the We in Miami podcast, discussing the legal troubles of Michael Tyler, known professionally as Mystikal.
Tyler was sentenced on June 16 after pleading guilty to third-degree rape in connection with a 2022 incident at his home in Prairieville, Louisiana. The plea came under a sentencing cap as he faced the possibility of a life sentence if convicted of first-degree rape.
Master P said he respected Tyler’s decision to accept responsibility while arguing that the case also raised broader concerns about mental health and substance use.
“I don’t think he ever got the right medicine he need,” Master P said during the interview. “Drugs is killing our culture… they’re self-medicating.”
His comments reflected his view that stigma surrounding mental health treatment can discourage people, including entertainers, from seeking professional help. However, Master P’s remarks do not establish that a mental health condition or lack of treatment caused Tyler’s criminal conduct.
Master P Reflects on Mystikal’s No Limit Legacy
Despite the seriousness of the case, Master P also spoke about Mystikal’s contributions to No Limit Records, where the rapper joined in 1996.
Mystikal became a prominent artist associated with the label during its late-1990s commercial run, releasing albums including Unpredictable and Ghetto Fabulous.
“Man, Mystikal has helped us build an empire,” Master P said, reflecting on the rapper’s role in the label’s history.
He also discussed plans to bring Tyler’s son, Jimi Nu, onstage for tribute performances, an effort to keep the rapper’s music in the spotlight while he serves his sentence.
The proposed performances would focus on Mystikal’s musical catalogue and his connection to the label that helped establish his career.

Mystikal’s Guilty Plea and 20-Year Sentence
Tyler’s sentence followed a case stemming from a 2022 incident involving a woman who accused him of sexual assault and torture. He pleaded guilty to third-degree rape rather than proceed to trial on a first-degree rape charge that carried the possibility of a life sentence.
At sentencing, Tyler reportedly expressed remorse, telling the victim: “If that’s what I did, I deserve every day of this sentence. I’m sorry. I hope you heal.”
His legal team had briefly attempted to withdraw the guilty plea shortly before the sentencing hearing, according to the source account, but the 20-year prison term remained in place.
Master P acknowledged the consequences Tyler now faces, saying the rapper was “where he need to be” to deal with the outcome of his actions.
His remarks therefore carried two messages: concern about mental health support and self-medication, alongside recognition that Mystikal must face the consequences of the case.
For Master P, the situation also marks a difficult chapter in the history of an artist who helped build No Limit Records’ musical legacy.
